Who knew? Ammonia-rich bird waste cools the atmosphere Posted: 17 Nov 2016 11:51 AM PST It turns out bird feces helps cool the Arctic. That's according to new research by atmospheric scientists, who are working to better understand key components of Arctic climate systems. |
Dressing up like a peacock: Bright colors by nanotechnology Posted: 17 Nov 2016 05:24 AM PST Colors are produced in a variety of ways. The best known colors are pigments. However, the very bright colors of the blue tarantula or peacock feathers do not result from pigments, but from nanostructures that cause the reflected light waves to overlap. This produces extraordinarily dynamic color effects. Scientists have now succeeded in replicating nanostructures that generate the same color irrespective of the viewing angle. |
Researchers create living bio-hybrid system Posted: 15 Nov 2016 08:16 AM PST A big challenge in cognitive or rehabilitation neurosciences is the ability to design a functional hybrid system that can connect and exchange information between biological systems, like neurons in the brain, and human-made electronic devices. A large effort of researchers in Italy brought together scientists across disciplines to analyze the biocompatibility of the substrate used to connect these biological and human-made components, and investigate the functionality of the adhering cells, creating a living biohybrid system. |
